Paul's Laws
These "laws" were developed over the years to instruct web
developers what Metheney Consulting expects from each project. While these
"laws" began as an internal document, you may enjoy knowing what philosophy
goes into each of our projects and the way we work.
I. Create Only World-Class Solutions.
Is this the most imaginative and best solution you can
create?
Is there a hundred more out there just like it?
Did you REALLY "think outside the box"? Ask "What
if…”, “Why not?", & “So what?”
Is this showcase worthy?
Is this your best work ever?
Does this blow away what the competition is doing?
How could you make it better?
II. Make the Client Ecstatic.
When the client/end-user sees it or grasps the
concept, does it suck the air out of their lungs with its impact,
imaginative execution or creativity?
A year later, are they going to be still talking about
the unbelievably great job we did for them?
III. Always Keep The Ultimate Goals In Mind.
What are the REAL goals?
Is every aspect designed toward the client's (& our)
business objectives?
Is it designed as a "whole" and not disconnected
elements?
What are you missing?
How could you make it better to achieve these goals?
IV. Stay In Scope - Under Budget & Ahead of Time.
Good estimates, great planning, best uses of resources
Are you staying focused on the plan, staying on track?
Communicate possible issues and projected results
BEFORE they happen.
See "Scotty's Rules of Engineering"
V. Make It Work 120%
Is its functionality (processes, system, programming,
etc.) bulletproof?
Does it meet and surpass the project "functionality"
goals & specifications?
VI. Document Everything.
For other developers, management, legal & the client,
keep and turn in "soft-copies" of notes, specs, procedures, issues,
actions, critical emails, etc. (CYA, help the next guy)
VII. Enjoy Your Work.
Be excited about the work, what you are doing and your
situation. If you are not, there are 3 things you can do about it:
Figure out what you want from your work and work
towards it
Negative attitudes & inflated egos have no positive effects on your life
or work
Confidence and an accurate self-assessment are
completely different from "egotism"
"Can-do" and " I am strong or weak here" vs. "I am
better than…"
Everyone has strengths & weaknesses -acknowledge and
use them
There is no such thing as THE right solution
Admitting screw-ups earns more respect than taking
credit
Get a Life - you cannot do consistently great work if
you are not happy as a whole
"Work to live, not live to work" - A job is a way to
finance your Life, not the reason you exist
Go home at a reasonable hour - take care of yourself
and your family
All that usual Golden Rule stuff…
Get a sense of humor (about yourself) - everyone else
does
