actual sale may take place weeks later over coffee, but the
"conversion" from a viewer to a lead/contact/prospect is your web
site's actual goal.
Making your site more profitable once that traffic is there can be
accomplished through a a number of ways depending on what your site may
need. Some factors may be outside your control such as the economy,
competitive pricing, etc. But some things you can ask yourself about
your web site's landing pages (pages that visitors "land" on when coming
in from search engines etc.)...
Is the page relevant to the ad that linked to it? If you
are advertising about XYZ widgets and once they get to your site,
they have to look around for it, you are more likely to lose and
lower your conversion rate.
Is the landing page "compelling"? You can't just have an
bland information page there. There are literally billions of web pages
competing for your visitor's attention. Your page (and site) need to
really engage and "grab" the visitor making a strong argument for your
products or services immediately. You may only have a few seconds to
capture their interest. Some of this is design; some content; and some
is your value proposition in your products or services. You have to be
selling something your target market wants to buy or needs.
Is the site easy to navigate? Once you have given them
what they were looking for, is it easy to move around the site? Does
the navigation almost consciously lead them where you want them to
go quickly? Once they have what they want, you now need to lead them
to the phone number, contact us page, order page or whatever you
want them to do.
